First Pio Radio Show [Sep. 28th, 2009|07:37 pm]
Hey all,

Something cool in my life recently has been the start up of the Pio Radio Show. Betsy was in Walla Walla while I was writing the first one and she also did a great job helping right some of the news briefs. Unfortunately that one wasn't recorded, but the second one was and here it is if any of you want to listen: http://whitmanpioneer.com/news-show/2009/09/28/the-news-hour-september-25-2009/. Once again, I help write the show and I'm also on air for a lot of it.

Hope everyone else is well.

Cal vs Oregon game [Sep. 26th, 2009|04:56 pm]
Tim,

I'm not going to rub it in, but I just have to point out this one thing. In our college careers, the Bears won three and the Ducks won one. So in that way you got us, but let's take a closer look....

Oregon scored: 24, 24, 16, and 42 in the four games.

Cal scored: 45, 31, 26, and 3.

Total those up and it's OREGON 106, CALIFORNIA 105

VICTORY TO THE DUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!

Awkward [May. 15th, 2009|09:58 pm]
I debated whether this was LJ post material or not. Ultimately I decided it was. The profile pic will save me so it doesn't look so short. Anyways, I think this is my new favorite website: http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/ All of you battling finals should check it out for a study break! I hope all is going well.

Trailblazers [Apr. 10th, 2009|11:18 pm]
Hey, hey, hey!!!! Anybody out there following the Blazers and is super excited for the playoffs?!?!?!?!?! It should be pretty amazing!! Also, fyi, Betsy's March Madness bracket had the national championship game exactly right and three out of the four final four. She clobbered my family and me, but lost to Obama because he correctly picked UNC to win.

Good News!!! [Mar. 9th, 2009|08:41 pm]
Hey all,

I realize my last post was self-indulgent, but bare with me because this one will be too!!! Also, what blog/LJ isn't self-indulgent?!

Anyways, the Pioneer held a dinner to honor the best sports, news, and feature stories of the past year as well as the best column and photograph. And, surprise, I won for best column!!!!! I thought I might win for sports, since I'm sports editor, but I'm not complaining. For those interested, the column argued that the women's rugby calender in which they all pose nude was a troubling campus tradition that needed to be examined. For background, the team normally tries to advertise their calender as empowering, but I argue against that. I was trying to provoke questions about it with the piece.

Here's the piece if you guys want to read it )

Pioneer Website Beats Berkeley [Mar. 1st, 2009|12:15 pm]
Hey all,

I just thought I'd share some good news with you. The Whitman Pioneer's new website just took Best in Show honors at the Associated Collegiate Press National Convention in San Diego!!!!

Here's the link to the website if you guys want to check it out:

http://whitmanpioneer.com/

Also, here's the link to the awards announcement:

http://studentpress.org/acp/winners/m09bs.html

Some of you may be asking, who did the Pioneer beat in this competition? Well, in second place, BEHIND the Pioneer was The Daily Californian from Berkeley. Congrats Tim, second place is a good finish, BUT NOT AS GOOD AS FIRST!!!!!

Of course I had nothing to do with putting the website together, but sports articles and blogs are on the website so I'm going to take partial credit anyways! Ha

Hope everybody is having a good semester/surviving it without too much insanity!

WHEW!!!! [Feb. 21st, 2009|09:15 pm]
DUCK MEN'S BASKETBALL WINS A GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They beat Stanford 68-60 and while it probably means Ernie Kent will stick around for another year, it also means that we don't become the second team ever to go winless in conference. I can't possibly imagine what a bunch of losers that one team must have been. They must come from a place where dimentia puts you in the majority.

Finally, I'd like to thank Stanford for being so horrible that we could beat them. Marc, maybe you should walk on and increase the team's athleticism.

P.S. On a different note, but still sports in a sense. Anyone who hasn't seen this clip from Conan should definitely watch it: http://www.nbc.com/Late_Night_with_Conan_O%27Brien/video/clips/old-time-baseball-22009/1031781/#share_content

Hot Christian Women [Dec. 6th, 2008|12:23 am]
So I got a strange facebook advertisement for a "Hot Christian women" dating site and so I googled the term to see what would come up. This was the very first entry that I got: http://datetosave.com/.

She also offers ten tips for Christian dating http://datetosave.com/christian_dating_tips.shtml

I hope this helps anybody seeking a hot heathen man. Just remember, missionary dating doesn't mean missionary position.

Sarah Palin officially sucks!!! [Oct. 4th, 2008|09:57 pm]
You guys might have seen this already, but in case you haven't here's a link to possibly the most reckless thing ever said in politics:

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/10/04/palin.obama/index.html

Coming off of an okay debate performance, I can't believe she would sink that low, and apparently attacks like these are the new strategy from the McCain campaign. I hope that the general public sees this as a desperate attempt from a sinking campaign, but the "Swift boat veteran's for Truth" worked in 2004, so we'll see.

In brighter news, I came across this hilarious book description of a novel written by Jason Elam. For those who don't know, Jason Elam was the placekicker (a generally pretty sissy position) for the Denver Broncos for a number of years. Somehow, that, combined with a trip to Iraq to support the troops has inspired him to write about Monday night football and a secret terrorist plot. The book is called "Monday Night Jihad" and here's the description that was posted on Amazon:

He thought his deadliest enemy knelt across the line of scrimmage. He was wrong! After a tour of duty in Afghanistan, Riley Covington is living his dream as a professional linebacker when he comes face to face with a radical terrorist group on his own home turf. Drawn into the nightmare around him, Riley returns to his former life as a member of a special ops team that crosses oceans in an attempt to stop the escalating attacks. But time is running out, and it soon becomes apparent that the terrorists are on the verge of achieving their goal--to strike at the very heart of America. This softcover edition also includes a teaser chapter of the next Riley Covington thriller.
Written by a member of the NFL; gives readers an insider look at the world of professional athletes and military intelligence. Examines the challenges of homeland security in large-venue events. Explores the tension between the desire for revenge and the constraints of the Christian faith, especially as it relates to Islam. Jason Elam has recently returned from Iraq, where he visited and supported the troops. You can read his journal at mondaynightjihad.blogspot.com

Hot Women [Sep. 26th, 2008|04:52 pm]
I'm not sure if this will come before or after Tim's post, so I'll just explain it anyway. Since the mob is a female-dominated group, Tim, Marc, and I have had to SUFFER through post after post talking about the men that various members of the mob find attractive. It's been terrible. Marc and Tim are married now! and I think it's because of all the hot men that you guys forced on them. What could they do? Nothing, and they became blogosphere life partners. We have been subject to the female gaze for too long. I mean, if the rest of society forces women into the male gaze, why can't the mob?

So, in response, Tim and I are going to show you some women that we find attractive.

Saying goodbye to the Kindergartners [May. 6th, 2008|09:36 pm]
Today was my last day tutoring the Kindergarteners and first graders at Sharpstein. Actually, some of you may not have ever known that I work in an elementary school, but this last semester has been special because I am in Mrs. Morgan's kindergarten classroom everyday of the week and so I really got a chance to bond with the kids that I worked with. They're also really smart kids. I was amazed at how much they could do because I don't remember doing anything that involved anything more than kicking some ass at Connect Four (My game! I challenge anyone who dares) and different art projects. Some of these kids, however, could write all the way to one hundred, count all the way to one hundred, identify all the numbers from 1-100 in a mixed deck, and tell me what came before and after various numbers like 40 (which is tough because they have to change dramatically to get to 39).

Anyways, this is a very mushy post, but I loved the kids and their silliness was a great stress relief from college. One girl, Vanessa, told me, "You know so many things. You're going to be a father," and it was silly little moments like that that really put a smile on my face. They were great people to connect with and they made me a going away present (this might not work):

The bottom says "Goodbye Mr. Andy" and all of the kids signed it in the middle.

In conclusion, saying goodbye to the class was difficult today, but I'll likely tutor them again next year.

P.S. WE WON IM BASKETBALL AND GOT OUR BLUE SHIRTS (the trophies here) TODAY!

Whitman News [Mar. 30th, 2008|09:36 pm]
I don't have a snazzy opening, but things are good at Whitman.

Sports editing has been fun this semester and I just started a new job for the sports information director. Mainly I'll be keeping statistics during varsity games here and I started this last Saturday with a baseball double header. They use this funky computer system where you punch in the results of each play as they happen during the game. I started out the first game shadowing a senior who has been doing it for awhile, but while I was watching him I got to keep the scoreboard and since the regular announcer couldn't make it to the first game, I got to announce all the players as they came to bat. One time I started introducing the wrong guy and instead of smoothly correcting myself I just said "oh! oops" into the microphone. I would have loved to have been in the stands listening to that come over the PA system. After a few innings, the senior I was working with let me take over the computer so I could get a hang of it. It was a lot of fun! I was supposed to do that again today, but it snowed and the game was rescheduled. There will be two more weekends when I do get to do it again. I'm looking forward to them.

As far as actual academics, which don't really matter, they are going fine. Oh! and my friends and I won the Division II IM Basketball crown before Spring Break!!! That was really exciting and fun.

Good luck with these-Marc might be the only one to get some of them [Feb. 27th, 2008|10:41 pm]
1. "And that's the way it is? Well then I just hate you, and I hate YOUR ASS FACE!!!"

2. "Look at me! Look at me! Don't look at those fat ass losers or freaks you look at ME!!!"

3. "Hey wha happened?"

4. "I'm sorry son but this plan sounds a little half baked."
"Oh no, it's fully baked."

5. "What are you in here for?"
"Didn't do it. Lawyer fucked me." SOLVED BY BETSY

6. "He's never tired! He's never miserable! When I was young I was tired and miserable!!"

7. "I eventually got a song through my head by a band called BoneyEm and I do not really like BoneyEm's music. And i thought, God dammit I'm going to die to BoneyEm."

8. "This is so black it's like, how much more black could this be? And the answer is none, none more black." SOLVED BY BETSY

9. "Porthos dreams of being a bear, and you want to shatter those dreams by saying he's *just* a dog? What a horrible candle-snuffing word. That's like saying, "He can't climb that mountain, he's just a man", or "That's not a diamond, it's just a rock." Just." SOLVED BY BETSY

10. "Michael and I grew old together. But at times, when we laughed, we grew young. If he was here now, if he could hear what I say, I'd congratulate him on being a great man, and thank him for being a friend."

11. (not in english) "While my people were writing philosophy your people were still swinging from the trees."
"What did he say?"
"He said he likes you." SOLVED BY BETSY AND MAHALA

12. "Anti-wrinkle cream there may be, but anti-fat bastard cream there is none."

13. (easy one) "Ten years ago, I fell in love with an Irish girl. She took my heart. But she went and screwed some guy she knew and now I'm in Dublin with a broken heart. Oh broken hearted Hoover fixer sucker guy. Oh broken hearted Hoover fixer sucker, sucker guy. One day I'll go there and win her once again, but until then I'm just a sucker of a guy." SOLVED BY BETSY AND MAHALA

14. "Rufus, Brint, and Meekus were like brothers to me. And when I say brother, I don't mean, like, an actual brother, but I mean it like the way black people use it. Which is more meaningful I think." SOLVED BY BETSY AND MAHALA

15. "I'll kill him, I'll kill him!"
"You don't really mean you'll kill me do you?"

Slam Dunk Contest [Feb. 17th, 2008|08:49 pm]
I don't know if anybody else watched the NBA Slam Dunk Contest on Saturday, but it was ridiculous! Usually it's filled with dunks that are just twists of previous dunks, but this year there was actual creativity. Here's the link if you guys want to see it:

Funny Sports Stuff [Jan. 24th, 2008|06:20 pm]
I am really having fun with one of my jobs here at Whitman. My responsibilities so far have been to research information about these two athletes that played at Whitman in the mid-1950s for their possible induction into the hall of fame. In order to do this, I have to look in old year books and newspapers. That is how I stumbled upon this really funny article from an old Whitman "Pioneer." The article was published on January 24, 1957 and goes as follows:

U. of O. Refuted On Segregated Stands

At the University of Oregon there has been talk of ending the football seating arrangement which at present segregates male and female students. The Oregon Daily Emerald suggests that this would decrease, rather than increase school spirit:
"What able-bodied, red-blooded, reasonably nice-looking fellow will yell his lungs out," they ask "when he's sitting next to an equally able-bodied, equally red-blooded and equally nice-looking young lady? He won't be yelling. He'll probably be making time; probably setting up a coffee date for right after the game. And what fellow is going to yell when to do so would brand him as a gung-ho lunkhead in the eyes of the petite little coed sitting next to him? Conversely, what petite little coed is going to yell when to do so would destroy the fellow's impression of her as a tender, soft-spoken dainty little miss?"

A real conundrum.
